A public service announcement (PSA) was honored promoting
the end of the word “retard.” It was created to enhance the “Spread the Word to
End the Word” Campaign. This announcement
features “Glee” actors Jane Lynch and Lauren Potter.
“The r-word is the same as every minority slur. Treat it
that way and don’t use it,” says Lynch in the PSA.
This PSA was honored by YouTube and won the “Fearless Video”
Award. It was chosen from among 1,000+
participants. Potter has a mental challenge
and in addition to “Glee”, she often advocates for the mentally challenged
community.
The Case Foundation, one of the award sponsors, stated that
taking risks and testing filmmaking can produce huge victories. In the video, the “r-word” was likened to
other demeaning terms for African-Americans and people who practice same-sex
partnerships. This PSA also earned a monetary
benefit of $2,500.
