Asperger’s Examined as an Excuse

NBC’s TV show “Parenthood” documents a couple who has a son with Asperger’s syndrome, and in a recent episode he tries to use his Asperger’s as an excuse.  The boy, Max, tells his parents he can’t play in gym class because of his condition.  His parents are shocked.

“You know what, I can’t play because I have a disability,” Max said. “It’s the easiest solution.”

Dr. Tony Attwood who studies Asperger’s syndrome extensively states there are advantages to having the condition.  A person with Asperger’s may have an overwhelming desire to gain information.  They also may exhibit a high sense of creativeness.

A person with Asperger’s may also be very honest and blunt according to Dr. Attwood.  They are extremely devout friends.  They also have a unique humor.

Asperger examinado como excusa

TV la NBC mostrar documentos de "Paternidad" de una pareja que tiene un hijo con el síndrome de Asperger, y en un episodio reciente intenta utilizar su Asperger como excusa.  El niño, Max, le dice a sus padres que no se puede reproducir en clase de Gimnasia debido a su condición.  Sus padres son sorprendidos.

Documentary to Highlight Woman’s Challenges

“Raising Renee” will air on HBO and highlight a woman who provides personal assistance for her sister who is mentally challenged.  The film centers on a promise the woman made to her mom.  This documentary details the triumphs and hardships the sisters face together. 

Beverley McIver was an accomplished painter and well-known in the art community.  When her mom passed away, she promised she would be Renee’s personal assistant.  Beverley didn’t want to move from her residence from Arizona to North Carolina after experiencing segregation and discrimination because she was African-American, but reluctantly made the move to obtain better services for Renee.

“Raising Renee” will debut February 22 on HBO2 at 8 p.m. EST.  This will be the first time Renee will try to live self-sufficiently without extensive assistance.  She is middle-aged and has a third-grader cognitive level.

This documentary isn’t the first to focus on people with mental challenges on HBO.  “Monica & David” focused on a couple with Down’s syndrome.  There has also been a film centering on an individual with autism.

Documental para resaltar los desafíos de la mujer

"Alzando Renee" aire en HBO y resaltar a una mujer que presta asistencia personal para su hermana que es mentales.  La película centra en una promesa de la mujer a su mamá.  Este documentales detalles los triunfos y dificultades las hermanas enfrentan juntos.

 Beverley McIver, fue un pintor consumado y conocido en la comunidad artística.  Cuando su mamá falleció, ella prometió que ella sería Asistente de personal de Renee.  Beverley no quería moverse de su residencia desde Arizona a Carolina del Norte después de experimentar la segregación y la discriminación porque ella era afroamericana, pero a regañadientes hizo el movimiento para obtener mejores servicios para Renee.

"Alzando a Renee" se estrenará el 22 de febrero en HBO2 a las 8 p.m. est.  Esta será la primera vez que Renee intentará vivir self-sufficiently sin amplia asistencia.  Ella es de mediana edad y tiene un nivel cognitivo de tercer grado.

President Surprises Activists with Speech

150+ activists gathered at the White House to discuss physically/mentally challenged topics.  They discussed these topics with White House representatives.  This event lasted a day and activists got a surprise: A Presidential visit. 

 

President Barack Obama gave a brief speech to the activists. He was happy with the way advocates spoke out against the significance of Medicaid.  He also assured activists more advocacy similar to that type is warranted.

 “People with disabilities deserve the chance to build a life for themselves in the communities where they choose to live,” Obama said, adding that he supports high education standards and employment opportunities for those with physical/mental challenges.

Activists present at the White House for these discussions were members of the Arc.  There were also people with physical/mental challenges as well as their support systems in attendance.  While present at the discussion, President Obama listened to top members of the Justice Department and activists regarding Medicaid.

Presidente sorpresas activistas con discurso

150++ activistas se reunieron en la casa blanca para discutir físicamente y mentalmente desafiaron temas.  Discutieron estos temas con representantes de la casa blanca.  Este evento duró un día y activistas llevaron una sorpresa: una visita presidencial.

White House Reps Plan Movement

President Barack Obama’s administration wants to address the topic of physically/mentally challenged matters in spring 2012.  They plan to travel cross country to discuss these topics.  These conferences are regional and will take place in nine cities.

Some of the cities scheduled to take place in these conferences include: Boston, Minneapolis, and Denver.  They will start the middle of March.  Some might also occur in the summer.

“I think it’s about showing what they’ve accomplished and letting folks at the regional level know where they can go for resources,” said Chris Thomson, vice president of corporate affairs and general counsel at United Cerebral Palsy.  “It’s a little unclear, but I definitely think it’s an opportunity for people to express their concerns.”

In a conference call, White House representatives outlined a starting agenda.  Details on who will host the conferences and events taking place weren’t given to activists.  White House representatives had no remarks on the conferences.

Casa Blanca representantes Plan de movimiento

Schools Demanded to Follow Inclusion

Dennis Walcot, chancellor of New York City’s public schools, stated that schools must raise the number of students with physical/mental challenges.  He also said if the schools didn’t follow this procedure, the districts would take over. Walcott feels that this would increase success rates academically for all students.

“Ensuring that incoming ninth graders with disabilities have the same access to screened high schools is just one way that we’re raising academic standards for all of our students,” Walcott said.

Enrollment of students with physical/mental challenges at New York City’s eleven premiere high schools has been three or less recently.  This caused Walcott to write an unsatisfactory email demanding schools to increase inclusion.  A student with a physical challenge said by not increasing school inclusion “it felt like schools had lost confidence in us.”

Activists think that students in New York City with physical/mental challenges were told to not go to those schools.  They feel they could have also been turned away.  Activists agree with the move by Walcott but want to be sure the right services are in place for this transition.

Escuelas exigidas seguir inclusión

Dennis Walcot, Canciller de las escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York, dijo que las escuelas deben aumentar el número de alumnos con problemas físicos y mentales.  También dijo que si las escuelas no seguir este procedimiento, los distritos se haría cargo.  Walcott se siente que esto aumentaría las tasas de éxito académico para todos los estudiantes.

Girl May Receive Transplant?

A transplant may be on the horizon for a New Jersey family.  Their young daughter was told she couldn’t have one because of her mental challenge.  Hospital representatives may be rethinking their choice.

Amelia Rivera is a three year old girl.  Her mental challenge causes her to have learning differences.    She also has seizures and unique facial features.

Last month, Chrissy Rivera (Amelia Rivera’s mother), wrote on her website that a Philadelphia hospital denied her a transplant.  This was supposedly because the hospital considered her “mentally retarded”.  Chrissy started an online petition that gained 37,000+ signatures.

 

The backlash and controversy regarding this decision caused the hospital to take action.  Hospital representatives invited the Riveras to re-discuss Amelia’s transplant.  Chrissy states she sees this as a positive sign.
