No Treatment for Girl Due to Challenge

Chrissy Rivera expressed anger at a Philadelphia hospital for denying her daughter a kidney transplant.  The reason is supposedly because she has a mental challenge.  Rivera wrote about her daughter’s story in a blog post, and since then 18,000+ have signed an online petition calling for the hospital to reverse its decision.

Rivera’s daughter has a mental challenge that affects one in 50,000 people.  Her challenge impacts her cognitive function.  She may experience seizures as a result of this condition.

“We are in the year 2012 and my child still does not have the right to live, the right to a transplant, because she is developmentally delayed,” Rivera wrote.

Representatives at the hospital stated that they don’t turn away anyone because of a physical/mental challenge.  The hospital’s Facebook page has received a lot of backlash from angry parents.  This is prompting the doctor who denied the transplant to talk to the Riveras about having the transplant.
